mktemp: fix mktemp -u temp.XXXXXX returning garbage when TMPDIR is set

Browse Source 
Use mktemp instead of tempnam for compatibility with real mktemp.
Don't let mktemp fail silently, print some simple error messages.
Don't ignore -q.
